As with every job we undertake it all starts with a risk assessment.
Tree surgery IS a dangerous profession and “the bigger the tree the bigger the risk”.
When I visually inspected this Oak tree there were signs of fungal decay low down in some of the stems.
Fungal decay in trees can sometimes be difficult to spot because it often starts inside and will weaken the tree from the inside out.
From the very beginning I was NOT prepared to allow my staff to climb the tree.
Because I couldn’t tell exactly how much decay was present in the tree, I considered it to be far too unpredictable to fell in one go. The closeness of the building and the gas tanks behind the containers were an ever-present reminder of how careful we needed to be on this job.
I estimated this tree to be Circa 10tonnes in weight and those containers wouldn’t be much protection if it all went pear shaped.
